Key Players

West Virginia Mountaineers

QB Jarret Doege

Nobody really talks about Jarret Doege in the Big 12 but he has quietly put together a nice season. Through eight games, Jarret is second in the Big 12 in passing yards and has thrown 13 touchdowns passes with just three interceptions. Despite his numbers the consistency and lack of help in the passing game has brought the offense down a bit. His receiving core has been subpar this season and with a little more help, Doege could be even better.

LB Tony Fields II

Normally the Stills brothers would be here but give credit to Tony who is having a fantastic season. Not only is he the tackling leader for West Virginia, he leads the entire Big 12 conference with 79 total tackles. Expect him to be everywhere on Saturday for this Mountaineer defense.

Iowa State Cyclones

RB Breece Hall

The nation’s power five rushing leader is back to get another crack at a 100-yard game after missing the mark against Texas last Friday. Last week was the first time all season that Breece did not rush for at least 100-yards. He is without a doubt the engine of this Iowa State offense and if he gets rolling, watch out everyone.

LB Mike Rose

After not being named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, I am sure Mike Rose will play with his head on fire like. Mike is having a career year as he is second in the Big 12 in tackles and has ten tackles for loss and an eye popping four interceptions. When the season ends, Mike will get my vote for Big 12 defensive player of the year.

Game Plan

West Virginia Mountaineers

Iowa State has a stout run defense and to be honest the Mountaineers are not a great rushing team to begin with. However, where you can beat the Cyclones is through the air. Iowa State is seventh against the pass in the conference and if Jarret Doege can get some help in the passing game, this matchup could be an interesting once. Defensively, the focus will be all about stopping Breece Hall.

Iowa State Cyclones

West Virginia is an incredibly good defense against not only the run but the pass as well. For the Cyclones to move the ball on offense it will take balance to keep that defense guessing. Do not be afraid to throw the ball on first down and take a shot deep. Roll with the game flow.

As for the defense, I would pressure Doege and not let him get comfortable. Iowa State has the advantage on the defensive line, and I expect defensive coordinator Jon Heacock to get creative.

Prediction

Iowa State 24, West Virginia 17

The Iowa State Cyclones are home for Senior Day coming off an emotional win over Texas. Despite WVU being rested and coming in with a strong defense, it’s Iowa State that is more balanced on both sides of the ball and will walk away with the win.
