Texas Tech Head Coach Matt Wells Tests Positive for COVID-19

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Arizona

Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Matt Wells tested positive for COVID-19 this week.

According to the University, Wells has returned home to isolate and will continue his coaching duties remotely. He will remain in the Big 12’s testing protocol in order to confirm the positive test. If Wells’ positive test is confirmed, he will miss the Texas Tech vs. Kansas on Saturday.

If Wells misses Saturday’s game, Texas Tech defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will serve as the team’s head coach for the match up. Patterson and Wells have plenty of history, as Wells brought Patterson to Texas Tech from his stint at Utah State.

Wells is 7-14 since taking over the Red Raiders, who are 3-6 this season and 2-6 in the Big 12 and are coming off a 50-44 loss to Oklahoma State last week. Meantime, Kansas is 0-7 and lost last week to the TCU Horned Frogs.

The Jayhawks have lost 12 games in a row, but their last win? Against Texas Tech last October when they picked up a 37-34 victory. However, Kansas hasn’t won in Lubbock since 2001.

Texas Tech and Kansas are set to kick off at 11:00 a.m. CST on Saturday.
