Iowa State Cyclones Officially Clinch Big 12 Championship Berth

NCAA Football: Kansas at Iowa State

The Iowa State Cyclones came into the weekend with a 99% chance of making the Big 12 Championship Game. And before even having to kick off against West Virginia at 2:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, the Cyclones are officially heading to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX for their first chance at a conference title since 1908.

The clinching came courtesy of the Texas Longhorns, who coincidentally enough, Iowa State beat last week. Iowa State would have clinched on Saturday with a win, or losses by Oklahoma, Oklahoma State or Kansas State.

It has been a historic season for Iowa State. Their seven league wins are the most in school history and its 30-18 mark in the last four seasons is the best four-year stretch in the modern era (1928-present).

This season has been the culmination of an incredible few years in Ames. Frankly, this is likely unthinkable for a fan base that has been used to being a bottom feeder in the Big 12 for the better part of the league’s existence. But since 2017, Iowa State has 23 Big 12 wins, which is the second-most league victories behind Oklahoma (29) and ahead of Texas (21).

This success is why the Matt Campbell rumors appear to be at a fever pitch. But Campbell has continued to brush off the noise and keep his team focused. Campbell is the only coach in the history of Iowa State football to defeat every league team in his career. This is also Iowa State’s fourth-straight winning season, which makes him the only coach in program history to accomplish this.

The season did not start off living up to the lofty expectations, as the Cyclones lost their season opener to Louisiana. But since then, Iowa State has only lost once, a 24-21 defeat against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Cyclones also boast the NCAA’s second-leading rusher in Breece Hall (1,260 yards), who has a nation’s best eight 100-yard rushing games.

Amazingly, the Cyclones have been one of the few teams who has not had a Big 12 game postponed due to COVID-19, so they will have two full weeks off until playing in the Big 12 Championship Game. However, the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys will need to play next Saturday, December 12th. Meantime, the Oklahoma Sooners will have to travel to play the West Virginia Mountaineers, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys travel to face the Baylor Bears.
