UPDATE: Following Oklahoma’s win over Baylor, Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley was asked about the news that Shane Beamer was taking the South Carolina job. Riley said, “I’ll wait to talk to him first. I mean, obviously he wasn’t available to coach for us tonight, so it’s not like I’ve been able to sit there and visit with him. But if it is true, certainly be thrilled for him. As I know, those are opportunities that you don’t always get. So if it is the case, it would be a great decision by South Carolina.”
As the Oklahoma Sooners were wrapping up a win over the Baylor Bears on Saturday night in Norman, FOX Sports reporter Bruce Feldman broke the news that OU assistant Shane Beamer is expected to become the next head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.
South Carolina fired Muschamp on Nov. 15 after the team lost to the Ole Miss Rebels and gave up 59 points.
As Feldman notes, Beamer was a former assistant with the Gamecocks and was reportedly popular with the players. Beamer was at South Carolina under Steve Spurrier from 2007 to 2010, before going to work for his father, the legendary Frank Beamer, at Virginia Tech.
Beamer has also had stints with Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Georgia before he wound up in Norman with the Sooners.
Beamer has been the Assistant Head Coach under Lincoln Riley for three seasons now, helping Oklahoma win two Big 12 Championships and reach the College Football Playoff the last two seasons.
The Sooners clinched a berth in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday with their win over Baylor and Oklahoma State’s loss to TCU. The Sooners will take on the West Virginia Mountaineers next week, a make up game following the postponement due to COVID-19 last week.
