Texas Tech to Bring Back Matt Wells in 2021, Fires OC David Yost

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Arizona

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are planning to bring back head coach Matt Wells in 2021, but are firing offensive coordinator David Yost, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Wells confirmed the news regarding Yost’s dismissal in a press release, saying, “Coach Yost cares deeply about this program, our players and is a true professional. This is a difficult decision, but I recognize that I have a responsibility to our players, to our fans and to our administration to do what is best for our program as we move forward. Sometimes change is necessary, and I feel like this is one of those times.

Texas Tech’s offense ranked sixth in the Big 12 in points per game, fifth in rushing yards per game and fourth in passing yards per game. But the unit seemed out of sync much of the season, no matter who was at quarterback.

Wells came in following the firing of Kliff Kingsbury in 2018 and has not improved the program in any meaningful way.

In his two seasons at Texas Tech, he’s a combined 7-14 in two seasons after going 4-8 last year and 4-6 this season. The Red Raiders finished ninth in the Big 12 last year and eighth in the Big 12 this year. Tech has won a combined five conference games in Wells’ two seasons on the job.

That has led to recent speculation around Wells’ job. Late last week, there were reports that Texas Tech boosters were working behind the scenes to get Briles into a conversation to replace Matt Wells, who has struggled in two seasons as head coach.

But now with Wells safe, at least for one more season, the question is now: Can he take Texas Tech to that next level? What would that mean? At least going .500 on the season and reaching bowl eligibility.

However this is easier said than done in a Big 12 Conference that plays a round robin schedule and doesn’t have any obvious doormats in the conference, outside of the Kansas Jayhawks.

But no matter what, the pressure is on Wells to make some noticeable strides in 2021, because if not, it will be his job that is likely on the chopping block.
