As much as some Texas boosters and fans wanted Tom Herman out of Austin, did Herman want out as well?
According to one report, that’s the case. During Paul Finebaum’s TV and radio show on Tuesday, Gene Sapakoff, the College Sports Editor for the Charleston Post and Courier, who covers the South Carolina Gamecocks, said Herman was pushing for the job.
Finebaum asked about his impressions of Shane Beamer of South Carolina. Sapakoff said, “I like him a lot more than Tom Herman, who I’ve been told, called the South Carolina Athletic Director, I’m not going to say begged for the job, but my sources say he was quite interested.”
Here’s the video of the exchange.
South Carolina, as was noted in the conversation, ended up hiring Oklahoma Sooners assistant Shane Beamer.
This report comes days after Texas Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte essentially confirmed that Tom Herman would be returning as the head coach in 2021.
Tom Herman’s wife responded to the report on her Twitter page, simply saying, “This is false”.
It’s been a crazy few weeks for Herman and the Longhorns.
After Texas lost to Iowa State on Thanksgiving Weekend, the Urban Meyer rumors really started picking up steam. But then the Longhorns went to Manhattan and blasted Kansas State 69-31 and things seemed to die down. It helped that repots came down that week that said Urban Meyer had chosen to not return to coaching.
Herman reached the Big 12 Championship Game in 2018, but since then Texas is 14-8. This is all despite Texas recruiting Top 10 classes the last three seasons, but the 2021 class is ranked No. 17 in the country and is ranked behind the Oklahoma Sooners and their in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies.
So what do we make of all of this? Could this just be SEC trolling? A way to try and hurt Texas and the Big 12? Or was Herman trying to plan his escape before he got the boot from Austin?
