One day after losing the Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma, the Iowa State Cyclones are heading to the Fiesta Bowl to take on the Oregon Ducks.
The Cyclones finished the season 8-3, with their losses coming against Louisiana, Oklahoma State and then Oklahoma in the conference title. Iowa State peaked at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings last week.
Oregon technically won the Pac-12 Championship this season, upsetting USC. But the Ducks were only in the game because Washington, who won the Pac-12 North division, couldn’t play in the conference championship game due to COVID-19 issues.
The last time a Big 12 team played in the Fiesta Bowl was the Baylor Bears who lost to UCF 52-42 following the 2013 season. Last season, Clemson beat Ohio State 29-23, however that game was a College Football Playoff semifinal match up.
Despite all of Matt Campbell’s unprecedented success at Iowa State, he is 1-2 in bowl games. The Cyclones won the Liberty Bowl over Memphis following the 2017 season. Two season ago, they lost the Alamo Bowl to Washington State 28-26 and then got rolled by Notre Dame in the Camping World Bowl 33-9 last season.
The Fiesta Bowl will kick off on Saturday, January 2nd, at 3:00 p.m. CST from Glendale, Arizona.
