Oklahoma Guard Umoja Gibson Sweeps Big 12 Weekly Awards

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma at Texas Christian

Oklahoma guard Umoja Gibson became the first player this season to sweep the weekly Big 12 basketball awards, as he was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for Jan. 4.

Gibson had a huge game against West Virginia on Saturday, scoring a season-high 29 points off the bench for the Sooners in their win over the ranked Mountaineers. Gibson shot 10-of-14 from the floor, including eight 3-pointers, matching the number of 3-pointers OU senior Brady Manek made in the team’s season opener last month.

Gibson also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. His 29 points were the most by any Big 12 player this season and was good enough for him to make the Heartland College Sports Starting 5 for this week, in spite of the fact that Gibson came off the bench.

His 29 points was the second-most off the bench for any Division I player this season.

Gibson is a first-year Sooner who played at North Texas last season.

The Sooners, who are receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Top 25 this week, travel to Baylor and to Kansas this week.
