CBS Sports ‘Frosh Watch’: Cade Cunningham Leads Big 12

NCAA Basketball: Texas Southern at Oklahoma State

Three Big 12 freshmen — Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State, Jalen Wilson of Kansas and Greg Brown of Texas — remained in the CBSSports.com ‘Frosh Watch’ released on Jan. 5, though Wilson and Brown did drop a little bit in the most recent rankings.

The list, put together by David Cobb and Kyle Boone, also included the CBS Sports/USBWA Freshman of the Week award, which was given to Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson for the week ending Jan. 4. Dickinson, a freshman averaged 22.5 points on 18-of-23 shooting in wins over Maryland and Northwestern.

Cunningham won that award on Dec. 15.

Oklahoma State’s loss to West Virginia — in which the Cowboys gave up a 19-point lead at home in the second half — did nothing to deter Cunningham’s stock on this list, as he remained the No. 1 freshman in the country. Cunningham shot 10-of-16 for 25 points and is now averaging 20 points per game in Big 12 play, making him not only a candidate for Big 12 Freshman of the Year, but also Big 12 Player of the Year.

Wilson slid down one spot, moving from No. 5 last week to No. 6 this week. He scored 20 points in the Jayhawks epic loss to Texas and is averaging 15.1 points per game this season.

Brown moved from No. 7 last week to No. 10 this week. In the Longhorns’ one game last week against Kansas, Brown was relatively quiet scoring-wise, though he did other things to help Texas win its first game at Allen Fieldhouse in the Big 12 era. Brown is averaging 11.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game this season.

The rest of the list includes a who’s who of NCAA freshmen, including Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs, LSU’s Cameron Thomas, USC’s Evan Mobley, Arkansas’ Moses Moody, Arizona State’s Josh Christopher and Florida State’s Scottie Barnes.
