TCU Safety Trevon Moehrig Wins Paycom Jim Thorpe Award

NCAA Football: Kansas at Texas Christian

TCU safety Trevon Moehrig was named the best defensive back in the nation receiving the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award during the Home Depot College Football Awards show on ESPN. He is the first in TCU football history to win this award.

Trevon came into the season labeled as one of the country’s top safeties as he was on several key preseason list before the year. He was also labeled as highest graded safety in 2019 according to PFF.

Despite TCU’s struggles, Trevon had 47 tackles this season along with nine pass breakups and two interceptions. It is quite the way to end his college career as he announced last week that he will be skipping his final season to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.

In 2019, as a sophomore, he was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team (AP and Coaches). Pro Football Focus rated him as the top-rated safety in the college game after he finished the season with 62 tackles, 4 interceptions and 11 pass-breakups.

As a freshman, Moehrig played special teams, but his teammates voted him the TCU Special Teams Player of the Year after he had six special teams tackles. He also had two starts that year at safety and recorded his first collegiate interception.
