Iowa State Cyclones

NFL Insiders Reportedly Believe Matt Campbell is too ‘Buddy-Buddy’ With Players

NCAA Football: Liberty Bowl-Iowa State vs Memphis

There are certainly a ton of Matt Campbell rumors floating around the NFL coaching world. He’s been listed as a “name to watch” for several teams. And while it seems incredibly unlikely Matt Campbell is leaving Ames anytime soon, obviously this is always a story worth watching.

Well one tidbit that might please Iowa State fans is this report from Pro Football Network‘s Tony Pauline. In a recent conversation, Matt Campbell’s name was being discussed regarding the New York Jets opening after the team fired Adam Gase.

It started with a recent ESPN article by Rich Cimini, Jets CEO Christopher Johnson laid out the new head coach’s expectations in New York.

“I don’t much like the term ‘CEO,’ but it does describe what we’re looking for. We want a head coach that coaches the entire team and his staff. You don’t have to be offensive, you don’t have to be defensive. This is a coach for the entire team. That’s very important to us looking forward.”

Owner Woody Johnson echoed those words, saying, “…the Jets were basically looking for an alpha dog type of coach. Sort of a strong disciplinarian to oversee everything. They want that strong personality, that alpha dog coach to basically run the whole show on the field.”

Then, Pro Football Network added in its report, “That doesn’t fit the sort of character that Matt Campbell would bring to the NFL. Tony Pauline had previously remarked that “people inside the league feel that [Campbell] doesn’t project well to the NFL. He’s too buddy-buddy with his players.

I don’t know how fairly that analysis is of Matt Campbell’s with his players, but if that is what keeps Matt Campbell in Ames and away from the NFL, I’ll tell you right now Iowa State football fans will take it.

The Cyclones are coming off a historic season where they won the Fiesta Bowl over Oregon. Plus, he has key players like Brock Purdy and Mike Rose returning in 2021, when Iowa State will remain one of the best teams in the conference.
