OK, so we all are already craving for more college football, right? Sure, the season is only one day old after Alabama beat Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday night. But I’m already thinking about fall leaves, Big 12 tailgates, and packed stadiums.
So is Watch Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, who already put together his way-too-early 2021 Preseason Top 25, where he has three Big 12 teams in his Top 10.
McMurphy has the Oklahoma Sooners at No. 4, the Iowa State Cyclones at No. 7 and the Texas Longhorns at No. 8. The only other Big 12 team he has ranked is Oklahoma State at No. 18, while TCU and West Virginia make the list of teams who “round out his Top 40”.
On the Oklahoma Sooners, McMurphy wrote in part, “The Sooners have won four Big 12 titles in as many seasons and will be favored to make it 5-for-5 under Riley. OU returns QB Spencer Rattler and up to 16 starters. The Sooners should be the best team in a very deep Big 12 Conference.”
Regarding the Cyclones, McMurphy was looking to the non-conference, saying, “A September date with in-state rival Iowa could determine if ISU is a serious College Football Playoff contender.”
To note, McMurphy ranked Iowa at No. 22.
The biggest shock is his ranking of Texas at No. 8, where he goes on to make the prediction too many have made in recent year, writing, “Texas is (going to be) back! That’s my prediction under new coach Steve Sarkisian, who has resurrected his career since being fired at USC. It won’t hurt Sark in his debut season that Texas returns 14 starters. QB Sam Ehlinger is gone, but leading receiver Joshua Moore will be back.”
If it holds true and the Big 12 has three teams in the Top 10 in the preseason, and that holds through 2021 in some capacity, then we are all in for a helluva ride come next fall.
Are we there yet?
