Texas-Iowa State men’s basketball game postponed

NCAA Basketball: Texas at Kansas

The Texas Longhorns learned Sunday that their game with the Iowa State Cyclones would be postponed, marking the eighth Big 12 men’s basketball game to be postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Longhorns (11-2, 5-1) were coming off an 82-67 win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday. Three Longhorns — Greg Brown, Kai Jones and Brock Cunningham — were scratched from that game less than an hour before tip-off. Texas didn’t disclose why before the game. Afterward, head coach Shaka Smart told reporters that if Texas played its game with Iowa State that the trio would not make the trip to due to COVID-19 protocols.

Iowa State was already on a COVID-19 pause due to a positive test within the program, which forced the postponement of its game with Kansas on Saturday.

Texas now has two games to make up due to COVID-19 protocols. The Longhorns’ scheduled Big 12 opener with Baylor on Dec. 13 was postponed due to COVID protocols within the Baylor program.

Iowa State now has three games to make up. The Cyclones’ game with Kansas State last Wednesday was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Kansas State program.

Two mid-week Big 12 games are already postponed. But, for now, the Baylor Bears are expected to host the Kansas Jayhawks on Monday night, their first meeting since last year’s game in Waco, Texas, when the pair met as Top 3 teams.
