Oklahoma State basketball is getting some more national attention and it’s not just because of Cade Cunningham. The TODAY Show featured Oklahoma State hoops on Monday morning as they shared the story of head coach Mike Boynton surprising walk-on player Dee Mitchell with a scholarship. Mitchell has been stocking produce at Walmart to help pay for school, but some of that financial burden has been taken off his plate courtesy of the program.
The backstory is as follows: In the middle of Mitchell’s 1-10 p.m. shift, he was surprised by Coach Boynton, who told the junior he’d earned a basketball scholarship for the remainder of his time at Oklahoma State.
Here’s a look at the video:
What’s interesting is that when Mitchell first asked to walk-on, Boynton didn’t have room for him in 2018. But then in January 2019, when Boynton kicked three Oklahoma State players off the team and the program held open tryouts to fill the roster, Mitchell made the team as a walk-on.
Mitchell hasn’t played much this season, just seeing two minutes of action in one game. But in 2019-20 he played in 19 games, averaging six minutes per game.
