Big 12 Shows Off Defensive Chops in Senior Bowl Practices

As some read this headline, you’re probably thinking to yourself, how is this possible? The national media tells me the Big 12 doesn’t play any defense, so how can they show off defensive chops?!
Well, you’d be someone who has been getting misled by a national college football media that is stuck in 2015. In fact, the Big 12 has been steadily improving its defensive play over the last 2-3 years, with Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU all playing some very good defense in some capacity.
And with the 2021 Senior Bowl set to take place on Saturday, there are already some accolades rolling in for Big 12 defensive players with the Senior Bowl practices underway this week.
The first award went to West Virginia LB Tony Fields who was voted the top linebacker on the National Team.
Also, Oklahoma defensive back Tre Brown was named the top defensive back on the American Team.
How many NFL media members, and heck college football media members, saw these awards and had to check. Huh? West Virginia? Oklahoma?! Big 12?! Defense?! How is this possible?!
Times are changing in the Big 12 and college football. For those of us who follow the sport, we’ve been watching this transformation happen slowly over the last couple of seasons. Maybe the rest of the football world will finally start to take notice.
