This is not one of those recruitments that is going to show up as a lead story on 247Sports or Rivals, but the Longhorns landed a player who might just sneak up on the Big 12 landscape in a couple of seasons.
Westlake DB Michael Taaffe announced via Twitter on Sunday that he was committing to the Texas Longhorns as a preferred walk on. In his announcement he shared a photo of himself from his toddler years in Texas gear, so as he put it, “Dreams come true”.
Taaffe is not listed on the 247Sports pages in any capacity, but Texas would do well with some grittier kids who are willing to outwork those around them and, while it’s cliche, bleed Burnt Orange. Taaffe clearly does that and mixing guys like him in and around the four and five-star studs would actually help the Texas locker room.
And we won’t sell Taaffe short. He was a First-Team All-District defensive back and Second-Team All-State defensive back. Also of note, he had a one-handed interception against the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2022, QB Quinn Ewers, in the 6A-I title game, which has to excite UT fans. Ewers was committed to Texas but flipped to Ohio State this past fall.
Either way, we often focus on how many four and five-star players end up at a place like Texas, but celebrating guys like Taaffe shouldn’t be overlooked as Steve Sarkisian looks to continue to build the talent and culture in Austin.
