If you can’t get there, well let’s change the rules to try and make it happen. That’s the case Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher is making.
On Tuesday during the ‘The Paul Finebaum Show,’ Fisher said he doesn’t think the current system of trying to identify the four best teams is the best way to crown a champion.
Fisher would like to see more programs get a shot at a national championship each year, saying, “I think, in my opinion, the playoff has to expand. I really do. I think it has to go to eight teams or maybe more. Whatever it becomes, incorporate the bowls in it because I think sometimes I think, like the Orange Bowl victory we had, would enhance all the bowls to put them in a playoff situation. I think you’d find the best teams in the playoff.”
So far, I agree with Jimbo Fisher. I made the case last month, writing why it is time for the College Football Playoff to expand beyond four teams.
Now where Fisher went off the deep end when he went on to say we should not overvalue conference championships as a basis for determining who gets into the College Football Playoff.
“I think with four teams you’re still leaving it out a little bit, in my opinion, because of other conference championships. Two or three teams might be in the best conference. I’m not trying to go against conference champions, but if you’re going to find the best teams, I think you have to expand the playoffs, incorporate the other bowls into it, and let everybody get a piece of that,” Fisher added.
That’s where his SEC bias is showing. Basically, Jimbo Fisher is saying, and I’m paraphrasing in a very satirical manner, “ya know, I can’t beat Nick Saban and Alabama. Heck, I’m not sure I can beat Kirby Smart and Georgia. So I’d really like it if the college football media can carry my water so three or four SEC teams can get into an eight team College Football Playoff and then we have a shot to win the title. That would be great, thanks!”
See now that Texas A&M is in the SEC, we are suppose to take them more seriously and realize that if they were still in the Big 12 Conference, they’d be owning it, but, you know, they now play in the almighty SEC!
Fisher knows that he will get ESPN, Paul Finebaum and most of the college football media to support him when he inevitably gets his butt kicked by Alabama in the regular season and then starts lobbying for a College Football Playoff spot in a theoretical expanded format that would include some at-large selections.
We see through you, Jimbo. And we’re not alone. We’re just the only ones willing to call it out for what it is.
