Baylor 1 of 2 Remaining Undefeated Teams after Drake’s Loss

NCAA Basketball: Louisiana-Lafayette at Baylor

The Baylor Bears are now one of only two remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division I college basketball after the Drake Bulldogs lost to Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears (17-0, 9-0 in Big 12), who did not play on Saturday due to a COVID-19 pause within the program, could only watch as Drake fell to the Crusaders, 74-57.

Drake (18-1, 9-1 in Missouri Valley) not only suffered its first loss of the season, it fell into a first-place tie with Loyola-Chicago at the top of the Missouri Valley standings. It also likely means the Bulldogs will fall out of the Associated Press Top 25 after making an appearance at No. 25 in this week’s poll.

Baylor, led by guards Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell, are expected to remain the No. 2 team in the country when the new Associated Press Top 25 poll comes out on Monday.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs, the nation’s only other undefeated team, are expected to remain at no. 1. But, the Bulldogs have a nonconference game on Monday against BYU, which will force them to put their undefeated record on the line outside of West Coast Conference play.

Baylor and Gonzaga were supposed to play each other in December, but a positive COVID-19 test an hour before tip-off stopped the game. Baylor coach Scott Drew and Gonzaga coach Mark Few would like to reschedule the game, but an opportunity has not presented itself.

The Bears are three games ahead of West Virginia in the Big 12 standings, and at this point feel like a good bet to win the Big 12 regular season conference title. The Bears will not play their scheduled game with Oklahoma on Wednesday due to the COVID pause, and they are expected to hit the floor on Saturday against Texas Tech.
