The 2021 Big 12 Tournament is set to begin next month, and as of now, the Conference plans to play the Tournament as its scheduled.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Big 12 Associate Commissioner Jeff Jackson said the Tournament is proceeding to be played as scheduled. However, the status of fans at the Big 12 Tournament is up in the air.
In a piece last week, we speculated that the Big 12 Conference may be better off cancelling the Big 12 Tournament as a way to protect the NCAA Tournament. We wrote last week, “If the Big 12 does conduct a tournament and COVID-19 causes a stoppage, any number of those tournament-bound teams may be forced to stay home. Imagine if a projected No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed, like Baylor, wins the regular season conference title, wins the conference tournament, and then misses the NCAA Tournament because someone got COVID-19 at the conference tournament. What a tough way to end a season especially after being tournament-bound in 2020 too.”
But as of now, it looks like those concerns aren’t being considered by the Big 12 Conference. The Conference Tournament is set to take place from March 10th to March 13th at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. Then, then NCAA Tournament starts with the “first four” teams playing on March 18 followed by the first round March 19-20.
