Despite playing just one game last week the Baylor Bears held steady in the latest USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll, which was released Feb. 8.
Baylor (17-0, 9-0 Big 12) remained No. 2, but only played one game last week, defeating Texas in Austin. The Bears’ other game for the week, against TCU, was postponed after the Bears had to go on a COVID-19 pause. The Bears’ first game this week, against Oklahoma, is also postponed. The Bears won’t play until Saturday against Texas Tech.
Texas (11-5, 5-4) took a drop for the third straight poll. At one point the No. 4 team in the nation, the Longhorns were No. 6 last week before falling to No. 13 this week. Texas lost both of its games last week, falling to Baylor and Oklahoma State. The loss to the Cowboys hurt, as it came in double overtime in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Texas, which has lost four of its last five games, has a chance to stop the bleeding against Kansas State and TCU.
Texas Tech and West Virginia went 2-0 last week and, as a result, both moved up in the poll this week. The Red Raiders (14-5, 6-4), which defeated Oklahoma and Kansas State last week, improved from No. 11 to No. 8. The Mountaineers (13-5, 6-3) are now in second place by themselves in the Big 12, thanks to wins over Iowa State and Kansas. With those wins, the Mountaineers moved up from No. 18 to No. 14.
That Mountaineers win over Kansas came with quite a bonus for West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins.
The Red Raiders and the Mountaineers face off on Tuesday in one of the biggest games of the week in the Big 12.
Oklahoma (12-5, 7-4) moved down from No. 14 to No. 12 after a week in which the Sooners split with Texas Tech (loss) and Iowa State (win). The Sooners were supposed to play Baylor on Wednesday, but they’ll wait a week, thanks to the Bears’ COVID-19 pause, before they face West Virginia on Saturday.
Kansas (12-7, 6-5), which dropped four spots to No. 22 last week, defeated Kansas State and lost to West Virginia last week. With the split week, the Jayhawks fell out of the USA Today Top 25 for the first time in 239 weeks, breaking their national record for most consecutive weeks in the USA Today Top 25 at 238 weeks in a row.
Oklahoma State (12-5, 5-5) which checked into the poll at No. 24 last week, found themselves at No. 22 this week. Last week the Cowboys beat Texas and lost to TCU.
