Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard had a meltdown for the ages at the end of the Red Raiders’ loss to West Virginia on Tuesday night.
The Red Raiders lost the game, 82-71, in a match-up of Top 15 teams in the AP poll. It was a close game throughout, with the Red Raiders down only six points going into the final stretch of the game.
But, with 24 seconds left in the game, Beard blew his top. By that point, Texas Tech’s top guard, Mac McClung, had fouled out of the game with 1:02 left and the Red Raiders down by only four points, 73-69. The Red Raiders had also lost forward Marcus Santos-Silva to foul trouble. All of that, coupled with a loose-ball foul on Tech’s Kevin McCullar led Beard to take exception with the officiating, and that’s putting it mildly.
The officials assessed a double technical foul and ejected Beard from the game. West Virginia’s Sean McNeil made three of the four free throws, part of his career-high 25 points on the night.
From there, Twitter went to work trying to bring context to Beard’s meltdown.
Beard has the Red Raiders, currently ranked No. 7, pointed toward another NCAA Tournament berth. But the loss to the Mountaineers gave the Red Raiders their fifth conference loss and allowed West Virginia to open up a two-game lead on the Red Raiders for second place in the Big 12 Conference.
In the meantime, let’s hope Beard gets a breath.
