The Big 12 reprimanded Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard after his epic meltdown in the final minute of the Red Raiders’ loss to West Virginia on Tuesday night.
The reprimand, announced on Thursday, was made in accordance with Big 12 Conference sportsmanship policies.
“Coach Beard’s conduct was inconsistent with sportsmanship expectations in the Big 12 Conference,” stated Commissioner Bob Bowlsby in a Big 12 release. “He is being issued a public reprimand, and put on notice that any future sportsmanship violations may lead to a more severe penalty.”
The Red Raiders lost the game, 82-71, in a match-up of Top 15 teams in the AP poll.
Beard’s tirade led game officials to assess a double technical foul and eject Beard from the game.
Beard has the Red Raiders, currently ranked No. 7, pointed toward another NCAA Tournament berth. But the loss to the Mountaineers gave the Red Raiders their fifth conference loss and allowed West Virginia to open up a two-game lead for second place in the Big 12 Conference.
The Red Raiders will not play this weekend due to Baylor’s COVID-19 pause. The Red Raiders will play next on Monday against TCU, as they try to stay above .500 in Big 12 action.
