Bob Huggins Fails to Make Hall-of-Fame Finalist

West Virginia head basketball coach Bob Huggins was not named a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Huggins, who has 899 career victories and will seek win No. 900 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday against Oklahoma State, was on the initial ballot for the fourth time in his career.

From the college coaching ranks, Villanova’s Jay Wright, who has taken the Wildcats to two national titles, made the list of finalists.


Also among the finalists were:

Rick Adelman, the ninth-winningest coach in NBA history;

Chris Bosh, a two-time NBA champion and 11-time NBA All-Star;

Michael Cooper, a five-time NBA champion and five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection;

Paul Pierce, an NBA Finals MVP and 10-time NBA All-Star;

Bill Russell, the legendary Celtics center who also served as the first Black NBA head coach;

Yolanda Griffith, a seven-time WNBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist;

Lauren Jackson, a seven-time WNBA All-Star and three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player;

And Marianne Stanley, an NCAA national champion and WNBA Coach of the Year.

Previous finalists that are finalists this year include:

Leta Andrews, the all-time winningest high school coach;

Tim Hardaway Sr., a five-time All-Star;

Marques Johnson, a concensus National Collegiate Player of the Year;

Ben Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year;

And Chris Webber, a five-time NBA All-Star.

The entire Class of 2021, including those selected by the direct elect committees, will be unveiled on May 16. Direct elect committees include the International Committee, Men’s and Women’s Veterans Committees, the Early African American Pioneer Committee and the Contributor Committee. The Class of 2021 Enshrinement ceremony is scheduled to take place in September 2021.
