Cyclones QB Target Rocco Becht to HCS: ‘Who Wouldn’t Want to Play at Iowa State?’
With the Iowa State football program on the rise under Matt Campbell, you know that recruiting will only go up. Although the Cyclones have just one commit for the 2022 class, that doesn’t mean things can’t pick up. Of course, having a quarterback bring the class together is always good. One of the Cyclones targets is 2022 quarterback Rocco Becht out of Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel, Florida.
Rocco is the son of former West Virginia tight end Anthony Becht who also played in the NFL for over a decade. 247 Sports has Rocco Becht ranked as a three-star quarterback prospect with over 12 offers. Here, I catch up with the star quarterback from the sunshine state.
HCS: What has the recruiting process been like for you during COVID-19?
Rocco: “It’s been tough. A lot of schools like me and want to offer me but they doubt my height and want to see me in person. And because of the dead period lasting so long, a lot of schools won’t be able to see me. I know I can play, I just got to show them I can. But the schools who know I can play know I am a top quarterback. I am grateful for the zooms, face times and calls I get every day.”
HCS: What are some of the current schools who stick out to you at the moment?
Rocco: “Currently I have an amazing relationship with Coach Gordon and Iowa State. They have told me multiple times that I can be the guy. Also, I fit into that offense very well considering we run some of the same stuff down at my high school. Bowling Green also has caught my eye with great coaches that coach hard and get you ready for the pros. I have also been in contact with Harvard and Penn a couple times. Their offensive schemes have impressed me a lot.”
HCS: Speaking of Iowa State, what are your thoughts about Matt Campbell?
Rocco: “Well, I haven’t gotten to speak with him yet, but I have heard such great things about him. He coaches hard, he is smart and loves the game. You can tell that the players there love him and that is why he signed the extension.”
HCS: What is your take on the Iowa State program?
Rocco: “What they are doing right now is incredible. I mean who wouldn’t want to go play at Iowa State in the position they are in right now? They are potentially going to be ranked in the top seven next season. Ever since Matt Campbell got there, he has changed the whole culture into a winning culture. I would love to be a part of that!”
HCS: Once everything opens back up, will you be taking a visit to Ames?
Rocco: “I would love to do that especially with all of the other schools, but my spring break is next week, and I might be heading up to Ames to check out the school, campus and all the important sites so that should be fun.”
HCS: Do you have a commitment date in mind?
Rocco: “April 12th.”
