Mike Boynton Just Turned Down a $50,000 Bonus for Beating Liberty

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma State at Texas

The Oklahoma State Cowboys took care of Liberty 69-60 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night. The win is just the program’s third win in the Big Dance over the past 10 years.

With the win, head coach Mike Boynton has earned a $50,000 bonus, per his contract. However, Boyton is reportedly turning that money down due to the pandemic, which has decimated athletic departments across college sports.

Check out this news from USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, which has to even make Oklahoma State haters (i.e. OU fans) appreciate Coach Boynton.

Just how quickly are Oklahoma State fans falling in love with Mike Boynton?

It was a shaky start to his head coaching tenure, but the program that he’s built, along with the selflessness and humility he continues to display is incredibly impressive.

By turning down these bonuses, it may allow them to keep a couple extra lower-level staffers. It might seem easy for the millionaire coach to turn this down. But remember, Boynton isn’t Roy Williams or Coach K who has made millions many times over. He’s made some coin, but he’s still on the front end of his career.

Mike Boynton signed an extension three years ago and his current contract runs through 2023-24, which in college coaching circles isn’t that long. Also, his salary of $1.7 million is ranked 62nd in the sport, according to the latest numbers.

Considering what Mike Boynton continues to showcase both on, and off, the court, it’s time for Oklahoma State to make sure they pay this man in the offseason. And this latest story is just another example of why and the kind of guy you want leading your program.
