247Sports Lists Iowa State as Team Capable of ‘Cinderella Run’ in 2021
The NCAA Tournament is all about the ‘Cinderella’ story, and this year has certainly been no different.
But if your team was been knocked out of the Big Dance or is more of a football school anyway, you’re focused on spring football practice.
Well 247Sports put together a list of teams who can make a “Cinderella Run” in the 2021 college football season. And from the Big 12, the Iowa State Cyclones made that list.
247Sports wrote in part, “Can a preseason top 10 team be Cinderella? You bet. Any team outside the traditional blueblood championship tier is worthy of donning a glass slipper in college football. Iowa State certainly qualifies with a 123-year history that does not include a single 10-win season.
But there’s serious momentum with this Cyclone team, so much so that’d I’d consider them near co-favorites with Oklahoma in the Big 12… Quarterback Brock Purdy had the worst season of his career as a junior. If Purdy can find his underclassman form this year, the Cyclones are a legitimate threat to reach the CFB Playoff. If someone needs to preemptively prepare a slipper, it should probably be a gold and cardinal Nike.”
There’s no doubt that Iowa State will be a Preseason Top 10 team, which is why I could not list them as a Cinderella. I understand the idea that historically, Iowa State would be considered as such. But a team that was a possession or two away from winning the Big 12 and maybe crashing a College Football Playoff if things broke right last season? I don’t see that.
But regardless, the fact that we are even having this conversation about how to classify a hyped-up season in Ames has Iowa State fans pinching themselves.
But with all this being said, when this many people and national media members are riding Iowa State, or any team for that matter, you do wonder if the stock is starting to get “overbought”.
