JR Blount is the latest assistant coach to join the Iowa State basketball program, as new head coach T.J. Otzelberger continues to assemble his staff for the 2021-22 season.
The Cyclones announced Blount’s hiring on Tuesday, making Blount the second new hire of Otzelberger’s short tenure as head coach at ISU.
Otzelberger knows Blount well from their short time together in the Mountain West Conference. Otzelberger was the head coach at UNLV for two seasons, while Blount was an assistant coach at Colorado State.
The Rams just wrapped up a run to the semifinals in the National Invitational Tournament.
Like Otzelberger, Blount has Midwest roots. Blount was previously the director of basketball operations and an assistant coach at Drake, and was a graduate assistant at Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Blount is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who played college basketball at Loyola-Chicago.
Otzelberger also brought in Kyle Green as an assistant coach. Green was the long-time assistant coach at Northern Iowa who also served under Tom Crean at Marquette.
Earlier this spring, Otzelberger announced that he would retain assistant coach Daniyal Robinson and director of basketball operations Micha Byars. Like Otzelberger, Robinson served under multiple Cyclones head coach — Doug McDermott and Steve Prohm — during his time in Ames. And, like Blount, Robinson has ties to Loyola-Chicago, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons before re-joining the Cyclones’ staff.
