Chris Beard Already In Pursuit of Sam Houston Transfer
New Texas head coach Chris Beard may already be working to bring a new transfer to the Longhorns, if a 247Sports.com report is any indication.
Sam Houston State guard Zach Nutall is in the transfer portal and told Brandon Jenkins that Texas is just one of the schools that is in pursuit of his services on the transfer market.
Nutall said that several Texas-based colleges are in pursuit, including SMU, TCU, and Texas A&M. But Texas certainly came up as well, as Nutall mentioned that Beard and Beard’s assistant coach, Ulric Maligi, reached out to him after the Red Raiders lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Now that Beard is headed for Texas, the Longhorns would appear to be in play, too.

“They have a lot of guys who have come in while Coach Beard has been there (at Texas Tech) and have been developed at an elite level as players,” Nutall said. “At the end of the day, they are winners. They are a contender every night in Big 12 games. They play nationally televised games every night. With the way they defend as a team and translate it into buckets on the offensive end, I feel their program will give me a great chance to develop as a player.”
Nutall is one of the top scorers in the transfer portal after three seasons at Sam Houston State, which is migrating to the Western Athletic Conference next season. Nutall averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game last season as he was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year.
Texas has already lost forward Kai Jones to the NBA Draft, and three backups have submitted their names to the transfer portal.
