Whenever you win a national championship, you win a lot more than just a ring and a banner. People always say to the victor go the spoils. Usually, you stop paying for your own food and drinks as long as you hang around campus.
For Baylor men’s basketball coach Scott Drew, he was in line to get a brand new decked-out Jeep from Allen Samuels Auto Group in Waco, Texas. The dealership had previously gifted custom vehicles to women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey after winning national championships and wanted to continue that tradition with Scott Drew.
However, that would not be the case. Ted Teague, the general manager of the Allen Samuels Auto Group did an interview for a local news station showing off the new Baylor-themed wrapped Jeep and made some boneheaded comments. During the interview, Teague made some comments about Scott Drew using the new jeep as a recruiting tool to “Pull some people out of the hood.”
It didn’t take long for Baylor to decline Teague’s offer as Scott Drew and athletic Director Mack Rhoades saying that his comments did not align with the program’s values.
Good for Baylor and Scott Drew. He doesn’t need a Jeep anyways. Baylor should give Scott Drew a raise to buy anything he wants from a different dealership.
