In The Athletic’s new ‘Super League,’ it’s the Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns and 13 other college football powers, according to writer Andy Staples.
Staples posted his story on Monday evening. He took his cue from Sunday’s announcement of a ‘Super League’ in European soccer. Right now a dozen teams, including teams soccer fans know by heart (but that I honestly don’t) are banding together to package themselves as a new league starting in 2023-24. They want to invite three more teams to make it a clean 15 teams.
So, that led Staples to think — who would be in a college football ‘Super League?’
Well, two Big 12 teams made the cut — the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.
Staples put together a group of teams that he wrote would bring television viewership and didn’t necessarily take into account on-field success. In other words, a popularity contest of sorts.
He wrote extensively about some of the decisions, for instance why he included Nebraska (16-28 the past four seasons, but also a traditional national power). He wrote that Texas A&M likely missed out on a spot because ‘Had Texas A&M won anything of consequence in the past 20 years, the Aggies might have been impossible to leave out of the league.’
Instead, Staples gave that spot to Oregon.
As for Oklahoma and Texas, Staples didn’t write much about the pair, which led me to believe that he felt they were ‘safe’ selections.
Oklahoma, of course, has seven claimed national titles, but hasn’t won one since 2000. However, the Sooners have won the last six Big 12 crowns and have reached the College Football Playoff and four College Football Playoff appearances.
The Longhorns have four claimed national titles, and while they haven’t won a Big 12 title since 2009 under Mack Brown, the Longhorns are one of the few schools with their own television network on traditional cable and is annually among the richest athletic programs in the country.
