Texas OL Samuel Cosmi Taken By WFT in NFL Draft

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at Texas

Texas offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi is now a member of the Washington Football Team, after he was selected No. 51 overall in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday.

Cosmi, 6-foot-7 and 309 pounds, was a four-year offensive lineman with 35 career games and 34 starts for the Longhorns. He capped his career in Austin with second-team All-America honors by CBS Sports/247Sports. Cosmi was also a two-time All-Big 12 selection, earning first-team honors in 2020. He was also an honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year two seasons in a row (2019-20), and a Big 12 All-Freshman honorable mention.

Longhorns fans knew big things were coming when USA Today selected Cosmi as a Freshman All-American in 2018.

Cosmi opted out of the 2020 season after the Iowa State game in an effort to prepare for the 2020 NFL Draft.

NFLDraftBible.com, part of the Sports Illustrated network of sites, thought Cosmi had the talent to end the Longhorns’ drought without a first-round pick. While Cosmi didn’t snap that streak, the scouts do thing he can be an NFL starter.

Per their scouting overview on Cosmi:

Over the last two seasons, Cosmi developed into one of the premier offensive linemen in college football. Body beautiful standing in at a hair over 6-foot-6 and 309 pounds, evaluators will be hard-pressed to find a more desirable frame in the class. With prototype length and athleticism, Cosmi has a big upside as a blind-side pass protector. His movement skills show up in the run game, where he is able to transition fluidly laterally and to the second level. Cosmi has put on a substantial amount of weight during his Longhorns career and the power behind his pads is still a work in progress. As he continues to develop physically, a clearer picture will be gained on just how dominant he can become.

Cosmi’s selection follows a 2020 in which three Longhorns were selected — defensive back Brandon Jones, wide receiver Devin Duvernay, and wide receiver Collin Johnson. He is the first Longhorns offensive lineman to be selected since Connor Willams went to the Dallas Cowboys in 2018.
