Cyclones Signee Tyrese Hunter Is Iverson Classic MVP

Iowa State signee Tyrese Hunter gave Cyclones fans a taste of the future after earning MVP honors at the 2021 Allen Iverson Roundball Classic on Saturday.

Hunter signed with the Cyclones in November and didn’t ask out of his letter of intent after the firing of Steve Prohm and the hiring of T.J. Otzelberger. That’s a good thing for the Cyclones, as Hunter was a Top 50 recruit in 2021 Class, per 247Sports.com. He was No. 23 in 247’s final composite rankings released last week.

Hunter scored 20 points in the 143-141 victory in the Roundball Classic championship game, and footage of his play in the game hit Twitter on Saturday.

Hunter, who played for St. Catherine’s in Racine, Wisconsin, is coming off a senior season in which he averaged 18.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists, while shooting 53.3 percent from the field.

Hunter scored 1,589 career points at St. Catherine’s and helped the team to a 53-1 record the last two seasons.

Hunter is the only prep member of the Class of 2021 for Iowa State. The Cyclones lost a raft of players to transfer, including top scorer Rasir Bolton, who left for Gonzaga. In their place, Otzelberger has signed a half-dozen transfers — Penn State’s Izaiah Brockington, UNLV’s Caleb Grill (who started his career at ISU), Kansas’ Tristan Enaruna, Dayton’s Robert Jones, Minnesota’s Gabe Kalscheur and Washington State’s Aljaz Kunc.
