Pro Football Focus Drops the Ball Once Again

I should learn by now that I can’t trust Pro Football Focus when it comes to certain things. I have said many times before here that I truly have a love/hate relationship with PFF.
I understand they have their own unique grading system and that’s great for them. However, I feel like when something makes too much sense, PFF drops the ball. Whether it’s ranking returning running backs or in this case, ranking the teams, sometimes Pro Football Focus needs to pull their head out of their rear end.
Maybe I am a bit harsh but after seeing this list of Pro Football Focus’ top 25 teams, I will let you be the judge of that. Here are the Big 12 teams that made their top 25.
#5 Oklahoma Sooners
Number five? What five teams are better than the Oklahoma Sooners right now? I believe they should be at number one and at the very least be in the top three. Somehow PFF has them behind Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia. Three of those teams ahead of them lose their starting quarterback from last season. I never thought I would see a lack of respect for Oklahoma going into 2021 but Pro Football Focus made it happen.
#17 Texas Longhorns
Probably a bit high for my taste considering Texas will be replacing some key areas from the 2020 team. Sure, Bijan Robinson will be a star at running back but there will be plenty of question marks on offense especially at quarterback. Maybe Steve Sarkisian surprises some people in Year One but to have Texas as the second highest ranked Big 12 team seems a little crazy to me.
#20 Oklahoma State Cowboys
I don’t have too much of an issue here. Maybe I would say the Cowboys should be a fringe top 15 team, but they had some issues last season. However, they bring back a ton of guys on defense and Spencer Sanders returns as the starting quarterback. If they can fix their struggles on the offensive line, and get some skill players to emerge, this team could be dangerous.
#21 Iowa State Cyclones
This has got to be a freaking joke, right? April Fool’s Day is behind us, but apparently the folks over at PFF are living in a world that has yet to be discovered. Clearly, Iowa State is the second-best team in the Big 12, and at worst, is a fringe top ten team in the preseason polls. They return nearly everyone from a team that made it to the Big 12 title game last season yet here they are ranked as the fourth best team in the Big 12. What a joke.
Here is how PFF ranks the Big 12 teams not in the top 25
#31 TCU Horned Frogs
#47 West Virginia Mountaineers
#60 Kansas State Wildcats
#74 Baylor Bears
#78 Texas Tech Red Raiders
#117 Kansas Jayhawks
When I look at the rest of the teams, I probably think TCU should get a small bump and maybe even West Virginia should be in the top 40. Clearly, PFF doesn’t think much of Kansas State, Baylor or Texas Tech. Kansas State should be ranked better than 60 but that’s just my two cents. As for Kansas, I was surprised they weren’t in the bottom five.
