Texas recruiting had been riding high in recent weeks. They just hosted Arch Manning and some of the other top players in the class of 2023, including five-star running back Rueben Owens. But on Thursday, Owens announced he was decommitting from Texas.
Owens is rated the No. 2 player at his position and No. 4 overall prospect in the state of Texas for the 2023 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.
Owens was the only commit in Texas’ 2023 cycle and was reportedly critical in helping Manning come to Austin last weekend.
“Although the University of Texas will still be one of the programs I will consider, I am officially decommitting and reopening my recruiting campaign,” Owens wrote.

Owens recently took unofficial visits to LSU and Alabama and will likely be able to pick any school in the country that he wants. Texas still appears to be a front runner for Owens’ services, but they’ll have to work a bit harder to retain him.
Over two seasons at El Campo, Texas, Owens has rushed for 2,319 yards and 30 touchdowns.
