Oklahoma, Iowa State, in Sporting News Preseason Top 10

NCAA Football: Big 12 Championship-Oklahoma at Iowa State

Oklahoma was No. 4 and Iowa State was No. 9 in The Sporting News’ preseason Top 25, which was released on Wednesday.

The Sooners and the Cyclones were among four Big 12 teams that were in the Top 25, along with Texas and Oklahoma State.

It’s not a big surprise that Oklahoma and Iowa State are the top two Big 12 teams in the poll. The pair met in the Big 12 Championship game last season, and the two teams split their meetings. Iowa State won the regular-season meeting, while Oklahoma won the Big 12 title game.

Ahead of the Sooners at No. 4 was No. 1 Alabama (the defending champion), No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Ohio State. All three teams reached the College Football Playoff last season.

Iowa State checked in at No. 9. Ahead of the Cyclones were Georgia (No. 5), Notre Dame (No. 6), Texas A&M (No. 7) and Florida (No. 8).

Texas, with new head coach Steve Sarkisian, was No. 13 in the rankings. Cincinnati was No. 10, LSU was No. 11 and USC was No. 12.

Oklahoma State came in at No. 17. Between the Cowboys and the Longhorns were No. 14 North Carolina, No. 15 Indiana, and No. 16 Oregon.

After Oklahoma State, the remainder of the Top 25 included No. 18 Iowa, No. 19 Miami (FL), No. 20 Wisconsin, No. 21 Ole Miss, No. 22 Auburn, No. 23 Coastal Carolina, No. 24 Army West Point, and No. 25 Penn State.
