Mike Miles, George Conditt IV, Selton Miguel In International Play
TCU’s Mike Miles, Iowa State’s George Conditt IV, Kansas State’s Selton Miguel are all participating in international play this week.
Miles is participating in scrimmages with the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup team, as they prepare for the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, which begins this weekend.
Conditt and Miguel are competing for Puerto Rico and Angola, respectively, in FIBA Olympic qualifying tournaments. Former Kansas star Andrew Wiggins and former Texas star Tristan Thompson are also playing for the Canadian team in FIBA qualifying.
Conditt scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds for Puerto Rico in a 90-83 loss to Italy on Wednesday in group play.
Puerto Rico actually had a seven-point halftime lead, and led the game by as much as 17 points in the second quarter.
Puerto Rico will continue to play in qualifying on Saturday in bracket play. It will play the first-place team from Group A, which could be Serbia, the Philippines, or the Dominican Republic.
Earlier this week, Miguel and Angola opened up its qualifying play against Poland. In that first game, Miguel had four points, one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot.
Poland ended up winning the game, 83-64.
Angola then played Slovenia, which was led by Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic. The Slovenians won, 118-68, with Doncic playing just 17 minutes. That loss eliminated Miguel and Angola from group play and from the opportunity to play in the Olympics.
Wiggins and Canada defeated China, 109-79, with Wiggins scoring 20 points in the victory. The Canadians move on to the semifinals this weekend, needing two more wins to qualify for the Olympics.
Miles, meanwhile, chipped in seven points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 24 minutes in Team USA’s final scrimmage in Latvia on Thursday, as the USA defeated Spain, 61-60.
With the last scrimmage out of the way, Miles and the rest of Team USA will begin opening round play against Turkey on Sunday. Team USA’s head coach is Miles’ boss at TCU, head coach Jamie Dixon.
