Cade Cunningham is reportedly ‘very excited’ about the prospect of joining the Detroit Pistons, even as several other NBA teams are angling to get the No. 1 overall pick.
The former Oklahoma State guard told league teams that he would only meet with the team that has the No. 1 overall pick, which is Detroit. The Pistons secured that pick in the NBA Draft Lottery last month. ESPN.com’s Jonathan Givony wrote on Wednesday that Cunningham is still the ‘overwhelming favorite’ to be the No. 1 overall pick. His report also noted Cunningham’s excitement at the prospect of joining the Pistons.
And while Cunningham is the favorite, the Pistons will reportedly explore other players like USC’s Evan Mobley and the G League Ignite’s Jalen Green
While the Pistons have struggled in recent years, they are under new management. General manager Troy Weaver was hired to run the team in June of 2020, and this draft will represent his second running the show in Detroit.

Weaver’s presence in the front office is also important, based on reporting that several teams are evaluating what it might take to persuade the Pistons to trade the rights to the pick so that they could take Cunningham at No. 1. Givony reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Houston Rockets, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to figure out what kind of package it would take to move up.
The Thunder have a connection the other teams don’t, if they want to pursue a trade. Weaver spent more than a decade with the Thunder, serving as an assistant general manager and eventually the president of basketball operations. He is largely credited with persuading the Thunders’ front office to draft Russell Westbrook out of college.
