Spencer Rattler Named Preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

The Big 12 football season gets underway the weekend of September 4th and that begins Year 8 of Heartland College Sports covering the best conference in college athletics. Our staff knows this conference as well as any group in the media landscape.

With Big 12 Media Days this week, we have made our Preseason All-Big 12 Team selections this week. Plus, the individual awards have been announced and the Heartland College Sports Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year is Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler.

Rattler finished the 2020 season with 3,031 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, while completing 68% of his passes. He also ran for 160 yards and six scores. And when you do a deep dive into the stats for Rattler, they could have been even more impressive than what they were in 2020.

Rattler is also the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this season. He is trying to follow the footsteps of previous Oklahoma quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray who both won Heisman Trophies and ended up being the No. 1 picks in the NFL Draft. Last season, Jalen Hurts was a Heisman Finalist, but did not win the award.

Rattler could also have some extra motivation as he was not named the First-Team All-Big 12 QB last season, as that award went to Brock Purdy from Iowa State.

But now, Rattler has a season under his belt, the best offensive mind in college football as his head coach, and a full stable of talent in the backfield, at wide receiver and on the offensive line, so we expect a huge season, likely his final in Norman, to end as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
