Gaines’ commitment bolsters a 2022 Cyclones class that is now a Top 30 class, per 247Sports.com. Iowa State’s class was ranked No. 59 last year. He is the second four-star player to commit to Iowa State. The first was defensive lineman Hunter Deyo out of Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Nearly all of the Cyclones’ 2022 commits are three-star recruits or higher.
The Cyclones are coming off a 9-3 season in 2020, one that saw the Cyclones beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the regular season and earn their first berth in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Cyclones lost that rematch with Oklahoma, 27-21, but bounced back to defeat Oregon, 34-17, in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Cyclones return a stacked roster that includes quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Breece Hall, tight end Charlie Kolar, linebacker Mike Rose and safety Greg Eisworth II. Head coach Matt Campbell and the Cyclones were picked second in the Big 12 preseason poll, released last week before Big 12 Media Days in Arlington, Texas.
