Sometimes you see odds for any sport and you have to look twice. That’s the case when the latest College Football Playoff odds came out and the Iowa State Cyclones and Texas Longhorns came in with the same number: 30/1.
Iowa State is projected to be a Top 10 team, with nearly every starter returning, and while Texas undoubtedly has a ton of talent, there are lots of unknowns with a new head coach in Steve Sarkisian, no clear starting quarterback, and a lot of other holes to fill.
But, the odds don’t lie. Here they are from SuperBookSports.
But so much of what bets are placed in Vegas is not simply about who is the “best” or “better”, it’s about where the bets are being placed. And for the Texas Longhorns, they have a national fan base that bets on their team. That’s in part how odds are calculated. If the money flows in on Texas in a major way, the odds have to continue to become more valuable and less attractive to the bettor to make that play.
However, for those of us that follow the Big 12 Conference, there’s no doubt Iowa State will be a heavy favorite as the second-best team in the conference after the Oklahoma Sooners, who were given the best Big 12 odds to win the National Championship.
The hardest part for Iowa State’s program may not be the talent on the field, but rather going from the “hunter” to the “hunted”, which changes the mindset of a team. That will be one of the most interesting on-field storylines to watch in the Big 12 this fall. This Iowa State team won’t be catching anyone by surprise.
