Four Big 12 teams could be on ESPN’s College GameDay in 2021, if Sports Illustrated’s prediction piece on Friday proves to be accurate.
Writer Kyle Wood took a stab at projecting each matchup that would be featured on College GameDay, ESPN’s massive pregame show every Saturday. His projected path involves Big 12 contenders in September, October and November.
First, Wood believes the Gameday crew will be in Ames, Iowa, when the Iowa State Cyclones face the Iowa Hawkeyes in their annual ‘Cy-Hawk’ contest on Sept. 11. The game wasn’t played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but both the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes carry significant national rankings into the contest from outlets like ESPN and the College Football America Yearbook.
Next, Wood believes the GameDay crew will be in Dallas, Texas, for the Red River Rivalry game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 9. The game, of course, now takes on additional prominence with the announcement that the two programs will eventually leave for the SEC. But, the game has not hosted GameDay since 2018. The Sooners are national title contenders, while Texas is breaking in first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Then, on Nov. 27, Wood believes the GameDay crew will take another stab at ‘Bedlam’ when the Sooners face the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The GameDay crew was at the game in 2020 and the Cowboys lost by 28 points. That will add even more fuel for OSU, given the SEC news.
ESPN previously announced the location of its first two GameDays of this season — Atlanta for the NC Central-Alcorn State game during Zero Week and then Charlotte for the Clemson-Georgia game in Week 1.
