Gerry Bohanon Named Starting Quarterback for Baylor Bears

After an open quarterback competition all offseason, the Baylor Bears have named Gerry Bohanon as their starting quarterback to begin the 2021 season.
Bohanon is a junior and is replacing Charlie Brewer, who transferred to Utah in the offseason. Bohanon served as Baylor’s backup the last two years and was in a competition in training camp with sophomore Jacob Zeno and redshirt freshman Blake Shapen.
The Bears made the announcement official on Twitter.
The last time Bohanon saw meaningful time was during the 2019 Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma where he struggled, completing just 4 of 15 passes for 56 yards, while getting sacked twice. In that game, it was Zeno who replaced Bohanon and led Baylor back to almost win the game in overtime.
However, that was under a different coach in Matt Rhule and a different system.
Bohanon has been highly-regarded since coming to Waco as one of the top prospects of the Matt Rhule era as a four-star prospect from Arkansas.
However because of the steadiness of Brewer, he’s only attempted 38 passes in his three seasons in Waco. Bohanon is considered the best of the bunch on the ground. During the 2019 season, he rushed 42 times for 267 yards (6.4 yards per carry) with three touchdowns.
The Baylor Bears open the season September 4th against Texas State.
