Former WVU QB Will Grier Cut by Carolina Panthers

A former Big 12 guy has cut a former Big 12 guy. On Tuesday, the Charlotte Panthers announced their latest pre-season roster cuts heading into the season and on the list was former West Virginia quarterback Will Grier, who was one of the 13 players cut by head coach Matt Rhule.
Grier was taken during the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Panthers, but that was prior to Rhule being the head coach. It was a homecoming of sorts for Grier, who is a Charlotte native. He played a season at Florida before transferring and spending two seasons at West Virginia before he was then selected by the Panthers. At WVU, Grier was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2017 and was an All-Big 12 Conference Second Team selection in 2018. He finished his career with over 7,000 passing yards, with 71 touchdowns to 20 interceptions.
In his last preseason game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, Grier went 5-7 for 47 yards and one touchdown.
Grier made two starts as a rookie, throwing four interceptions without any touchdown passes, but didn’t appear in any games last year under Rhule. With Grier gone, P.J. Walker is the only quarterback behind Sam Darnold on Carolina’s depth chart.
