Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua is a part of our Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s Top 25 returning players countdown as we get closer to the 2021-22 college basketball season opener.
No. 25: Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, F, Baylor
Where he left off: Tchamwa Tchatchoua was a key part of Baylor’s run to the national championship last season, even though he did play a huge part in putting points on the board. Thanks to the Bears’ stable of experienced guards, he was able focus on doing the other things the Bears needed — namely, rebounding, interior defense and energy off the bench. He averaged 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, sharing time on the floor with Flo Thamba. His play and skill developed during the season, and his high-water mark for impact came in the national semifinal game against Houston, in which he scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds against the Cougars.
Where he’s headed: Tchamwa Tchatchoua is one of those players that could end up having a huge impact on the Big 12 season. The time-share with Thamba worked fine last season. But, of those two players, Tchamwa Tchatchoua is the one that has the higher ‘ceiling’ for improvement. He has the skill level to get better on offense, maintain his defensive ability and give the Bears energy, whether it comes off the bench or in the starting lineup.
Top 25 criteria: ONLY players that played in the Big 12 last season were considered. Rankings are based on where players left off at the end of last season, as we are not able to make assumptions about the improvements players have made this offseason.
