Kalib Boone is a part of our Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s Top 25 returning players countdown as we get closer to the 2021-22 college basketball season opener.
No. 16: Kalib Boone, F, Oklahoma State
Where he left off: By season’s end Boone made a case to be included on the All-Big 12 team, but he didn’t quite make the cut. But his shooting percentage (64.2) was the best in Oklahoma State history. He averaged 9.4 points per game, and that doubled his scoring average from his freshman season. He also led the Big 12 with 49 blocked shots, which also put him in the Top 35 nationally. His per-game average (1.63) was second in the Big 12 behind former TCU forward Kevin Samuel. He also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game, which was in the Top 15 in the Big 12.
He showed off his defensive game in the Big 12 Tournament, as he blocked six shots in games against Baylor and West Virginia, on his way to 14 total blocked shots for the tournament. That was also an OSU record.
Where he’s headed: This season is Boone’s opportunity to assert himself as one of the top players in the Big 12, and not just one of the top big men. He should move into double figures in scoring, improve his rebounding average to seven or eight boards per game, and remain one of the biggest defensive stars in the paint. He is already such an assertive shot blocker that the next step is for him to improve his lateral defense against larger players in the paint. It’s entirely possible his game could emerge in full and he could find himself a Top 10 player by season’s end. One thing to note — as OSU enters fall practices, Boone is a little banged up, and his health is something to watch.
Top 25 criteria: ONLY players that played in the Big 12 last season were considered. Rankings are based on where players left off at the end of last season, as we are not able to make assumptions about the improvements players have made this offseason.
