2021-22 Big 12 Basketball Top 25 Returning Players: Taz Sherman

NCAA Basketball: Kansas State at West Virginia

Taz Sherman is a part of our Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s Top 25 returning players countdown as we get closer to the 2021-22 college basketball season opener.

No. 10: Taz Sherman, G, West Virginia

Where he left off: Sherman only started six games for West Virginia last season, but he emerged as one of the conference’s best guards, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. Sherman averaged 13.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He shot 41.3 percent from the field, 35.9 percent from 3-point range and 87.3 percent from the free throw line. He hit double figures in 21 of the 28 games he played, and that included a career-high 26 points against eventual national champion Baylor. He also had big games against TCU (23 points) and Kansas (25 points).

Where he’s headed: Sherman is sure to start this season, with the departure of Miles McBride for the NBA. He could end up being the Mountaineers’ leading scorer in 2021-22, especially if he’s able to improve his 3-point shooting percentage. Like Sean McNeil, he put his name in for the NBA Draft, but retained his eligibility, in an effort to determine what he needed to do to improve. One area the NBA is sure to want improvement is in Sherman’s assist total (he had only 40). More usage should allow him to improve that total. The Mountaineers will also be looking for a guard that can emulate what McBride did defensively a year ago. Sherman is a prime candidate to assume that role, too. It would not surprise me to see Sherman earn Al-Big 12 First-Team or Second-Team honors.

Top 25 criteria: ONLY players that played in the Big 12 last season were considered. Rankings are based on where players left off at the end of last season, as we are not able to make assumptions about the improvements players have made this offseason.
