2021-22 Big 12 Basketball Top 25 Returning Players: Courtney Ramey

NCAA Basketball: Texas Tech at Texas

Courtney Ramey is a part of our Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s Top 25 returning players countdown as we get closer to the 2021-22 college basketball season opener.

No. 7: Courtney Ramey, G, Texas

Where he left off: Ramey played all but one game for the Longhorns last season, starting in all of his appearances as part of a triumvirate of guards (Andrew Jones, Matt Coleman III). Ramey played his way into All-Big 12 Third Team  honors after he averaged 12.2 points, 3.9 assists and 33.6 minutes per game. He was one of the most effective 3-point shooters in the league last year, making 41.4 percent of his shots. He was also an 83.1 percent free-throw shooter.

He hit a career-best seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points against West Virginia near the end of the regular season and helped fuel the first Big 12 Tournament title in Texas basketball history. After the season, Ramey declared for the NBA Draft, but retained his eligibility. Once he had his scouting report card, Ramey chose to return for his fourth season at Texas.

Where he’s headed: Ramey should start this season alongside Jones and transfer Marcus Carr, whose offensive ability has the potential to transform the offense. Ramey has the ability to run the point, but his bigger value is at the off-guard position, where he can create off the dribble, hit the 3-pointer off perimeter passes and then defense doggedly on the other end. He’s developed a tenacious defensive personality during his time at Texas, which should be a perfect fit for new head coach Chris Beard, who preaches defense.

Top 25 criteria: ONLY players that played in the Big 12 last season were considered. Rankings are based on where players left off at the end of last season, as we are not able to make assumptions about the improvements players have made this offseason.
