Big 12 Football Defenses by the Numbers: Week 7

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Basketball Tipoff

Apologies for the late edition of Big 12 defensive numbers. The league features some damn fine offensive teams and some finer defensive teams. As we round the corner, the contenders are searching for the magic balance of both.

Please note that I’ve removed the sack counters because trying to rectify discrepancies between different stat banks has become unwieldy for the time being.

Looking over these numbers, it’s amazing to see that TCU statistically has the second worst defense in the league. KU is, without surprise, the worst.

The best defense is in the league is Iowa State’s, but Oklahoma State’s is not far behind.

Here are the numbers charting the league’s defenses after Week 7.

As always, caveat lector: stats can be deceiving.

2, 2, 5, 7, 7, 8

2 Sacks by ISU’s Will McDonald against K-State

2 TCU’s Ochuan Mathis against Oklahoma

5 Sacks by 5 different defenders for Baylor against BYU

7 Tackles for loss by Baylor against BYU

7 Tackles for loss by Oklahoma State against Texas a

8 Tackles for loss by Texas against Oklahoma State

10. Texas – 86 (+14); 12.29 per game

Note: What to make of the fact that three of the four teams with the fewest missed tackles in the league have combined for zero wins in conference play? Maybe one must be in position to make a tackle to miss a tackle? Maybe these teams aren’t as far from winning games as it may appear. Maybe it’s a sign that the offenses are hanging the defenses out to dry. Maybe all the above and more.
