Dillon Mitchell, 5-Star Recruit, Commits to Texas Longhorns

NCAA Basketball: Texas Tech at Texas

Dillon Mitchell, a five-star recruit, announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Monday, which is a big get for first-year Longhorns head coach Chris Beard.

Mitchell announced his commitment via Twitter. The first day he can sign a letter of intent with Texas is Nov. 10.

Mitchell is the second commitment in the 2022 recruiting cycle for the Longhorns.

Mitchell, who plays for Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, is a 6-foot-7 small forward who is the No. 28 ranked player in the country per 247Sports.com.

He joins Dallas (Texas) Kimball guard Arterio Morris, who has already committed to Texas. The 6-foot-3 point guard is also a five-star recruit and is just ahead of Mitchell in the national rankings at No. 23.

While Beard’s 2022 class, for now, is ranked No. 54 overall via 247Sports, it’s one of the few in the country with a pair of five-star, Top 30 recruits.

Texas returns two starters from last year’s Big 12 Tournament champions, Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey. Beard worked the transfer portal to near perfection, bringing in at least three starter-ready players in guard Marcus Carr, forward Timmy Allen and forward Tre Mitchell, along with five other transfers that should see playing time immediately.

Beard had just one player in his 2021 recruiting class, but it was a big one — Plano (Texas) forward Jaylon Tyson, who followed Beard to Texas after he originally committed to Beard when he was at Texas Tech.

Texas is the No. 5 team in the AP Top 25 Preseason poll, and was voted second in the Big 12 Coaches Poll.
