Joey McGuire, Texas Tech Get Two Cedar Hill Commitments

NCAA Football: Baylor vs Texas Tech

Joey McGuire has already secured two new recruits for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and he hasn’t even had an official press conference yet.

Two Cedar Hill players — which is the high school McGuire coached at before moving into an assistant coach role at Baylor five years ago — announced on social media that they were committing to the Red Raiders.

The first was Jalon Peoples. His commitment message on Twitter included a photo of him in a Red Raiders uniform, an iPhone, and a text message that appeared to be from McGuire, which read ‘Hey Jalon, so excited for you to be a Red Raider! Let’s gooooooo!’

The 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback, is listed as a three-star player at 247Sports.com and ranked as the No. 48 overall cornerback in the country in the site’s composite rankings. Peoples was considering at least three other Big 12 schools, including Baylor, where McGuire was in charge of his recruitment for the Bears.

A few hours later, Harvey Dyson followed Peoples.

Dyson, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive lineman, is also a three-star recruit, as ranked by 247Sports.com. The site ranks him as the No. 218-ranked overall player in Texas.

Dyson was considering Arizona, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and Kansas State, among other schools.

This is the net effect Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt was hoping for when he announced McGuire’s hiring on Monday. The fifth-year Baylor assistant won three state championships at Cedar Hill and is a well-respected name among Texas high school coaches. He jumped to the Baylor staff in 2017 when the Bears hired Matt Rhule, who was from out of state and needed to build relationships quickly. When Dave Aranda took over the Bears in 2020, he kept McGuire on staff.

The Red Raiders will formally introduce McGuire at noon on Tuesday. He will join the Red Raider program immediately, but interim coach Sonny Cumbie will finish out the season.
